До 26 жовтня триває зголошення на участь у офлайн-курсі з цифрової історії. Цей курс покликаний ознайомити з методами цифрової гуманітаристики, які можна застосовувати в урбаністиці, а також поставити питання про те, як ці методи впливають на дослідників і практиків у сфері та їхню аргументацію. 

Till 26 October, the registration for the in-person course in digital history is open. This course is designed to introduce methods of digital humanities that can be applied to urban studies, as well as to explore how these methods influence researchers and practitioners in the field and shape their arguments.

We are resuming the collection of materials for the TG Archive of War to document testimonies from Kyiv residents’ building chat groups on the platform regarding the consequences of the energy crisis that arose during the 2025–2026 heating season as a result of Russia’s shelling of the capital’s thermal power plants.

З 1 жовтня 2026 року до кінця лютого 2027 року директорка Центру д-ка Софія Дяк та історикиня проф. Мейгіл Фавлер будуть гостьовими дослідницями  в Institute for Advacnced Studies, CEU. Разом вони працюватимуть над книгою “A Concise History of Ukraine” для видавництва Кембриджського університету. 

From October 1, 2026, through the end of February 2027, the Center’s director, Dr. Sofia Dyak, and historian Prof. Mayhill Fowler will be visiting researchers at the Institute for Advanced Studies at CEU. Together, they will work on the book A Concise History of Ukraine for Cambridge University Press.

Through the concept of “present absence,” the book offers several explorations of the complex reality in Bosnia and Herzegovina three decades after the end of the war.

On October 7 at 18:30, Ivanna Cherchovych will give a lecture on one of the most common types of crimes committed by women in Galicia during the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries—infanticide—and its legal representation and punishment from the perspective of the history of emotion.

On October 17 at 11:00, Inna Zolotar will lead a city walk dedicated to Lviv’s lawyers and jurists and the Lviv School of Law, during which we will discuss how the city and its unique characteristics shaped their personalities, and how the social connections forged in Lviv’s coffeehouses influenced the creation of a new system of international law.

On October 29 at 17:00, we invite you to an online presentation by Paul Jaskot on the architecture of Kraków during the Nazi occupation. An analysis of the physical reality and construction processes—combining digital and analog methods with historical sources—will allow us to explore the political and cultural dynamics of genocide in a more systematic way.

On October 6 we invite residents and visitors of Pidvolochysk to participate in the free digitization of family archives — postcards, photos, letters, and film reels — as well as to visit the temporary exhibition “From Place to Place: Stories from Scattered Archives” and share their own memories of the town’s past.

On October 7, the temporary exhibition “From Place to Place” will be open to residents and visitors of Volochysk, where all interested can have their family archives digitized for free, learn more about the town’s past, and share their own memories and family stories.

8 жовтня жителі та гості Збаража зможуть безкоштовно оцифрувати сімейні архіви: фотографії на міській площі, на робочому місці у школі, лікарні; кадри сімейних подій, відпочинку та міських святкувань на кіноплівках 8 мм чи 16 мм, а також долучитись до міської прогулянки про Іду Фінк.

On October 8, residents and visitors of Zbarazh will be able to digitize their family archives for free: photographs taken in the town square, at school, or at the hospital; footage of family events, vacations, and town celebrations on 8 mm or 16 mm film; and join a city walk about Ida Fink.

22-24 жовтня у Центрі міської історії відбудеться міжнародна конференція, присвячена методологічним зв’язкам між міською історією та цифровою гуманітаристикою. Її мета — осмислити складність історії міста і культурних чи соціальних контекстів у ньому за допомогою цифрових інструментів, а також поставити питання: як — і чи взагалі — цифрові технології змінюють наукову аргументацію в дослідженнях історії міст? 

On October 22–24, the Center for Urban History will host an international conference dedicated to the methodological connections between urban history and the digital humanities. Its goal is to explore the complexity of urban history and its cultural and social contexts using digital tools, as well as to ask: How—and if at all—do digital technologies change scholarly argumentation in urban history research?

Лекції присвячені практикам адаптивного повторного використання об’єктів культурної спадщини, як матеріальної, так і нематеріальної, у ширшому регіоні Східно-Центральної Європи, зокрема й в Україні. Iryna Sklokina’s course on heritage preservation is available on the REeSources educational platform. The lectures focus on practices of adaptive reuse of cultural heritage sites—both tangible and intangible—in the broader region of East Central Europe, including Ukraine. The course is available in English.

Аспірантка FWO, працює на кафедрі соціальної роботи та соціальної педагогіки Гентського університету. Під час резиденції у Центрі працює над статтею, у якій розглядає документацію жінками життя в Україні як форму контрархівування, спрямовану проти домінуючої призми ефектного насильства, через яку Україна часто подається у західних ЗМІ.

She is an FWO PhD Fellow affiliated with the Department of Social Work and Social Pedagogy at Ghent University. During her residency at the Center for Urban History, Hannah will work on an article in which she conceptualizes the women’s documentation of life in Ukraine as a form of counter-archiving against the dominant prism of spectacular violence through which Ukraine is often framed in Western mainstream media. 

Постдокторантка FNRS, працює у Центрі досліджень політичного життя (CEVIPOL) при Вільному університеті в Брюсселі. Під час перебування в Центрі збиратиме нові дані для свого нового дослідницького проєкту “Війна в Україні крізь призму інституту сім’ї: на шляху до соціології сім’ї в умовах війни”.

She is an FNRS Postdoctoral Fellow affiliated with the Centre d’Étude de la vie politique (CEVIPOL) at Université libre de Bruxelles. During her residency at the Center for Urban History, Coline will collect new data for her new research project “The War in Ukraine Through The Prism of the Family Institution: For a Sociology of the Family at War.”
