On July 1, 2019, at 6.30 pm, we invite you to the book presentation by Oleksiy Bykov and Ievgeniia Gubkina "Soviet Modernism. Brutalism. Post-Modernism. Buildings and Structures in Ukraine 1955-1991" (Osnovy Publishing, 2019).
Soviet architecture in Ukraine has been rather in vogue abroad. At home, however, it is a different story: due to various political and economic factors and the stigma that is attached to everything Soviet, many buildings from the Soviet period are not being maintained, and are destroyed. A book by Alex Bykov and Ievgeniia Gubkina is an attempt to actualize Soviet Modernism within public and academic discourse of Ukraine. Based on extensive research, the book offers a rethinking of postwar Soviet architecture. Photos by Bykov document the buildings in their current state, while Gubkian’s criticisms and analysis give an unexpected spin to a multifaceted architectural movement placing it into a global, historical, and political context.
The book will be presented by Oleksiy Bykov.
