Exhibition Hall of the Center for Urban History

We invite you to attend the Open House Day and share the fixed stories on slides from your own family archives. We invite you to bring your slides to the Center for Urban History to view them together and share your personal history, but also to digitize your collections for free and learn how to take care of the slides and store them properly.

Many families still have slides, but no longer have the equipment to view them. Positive film was popular in the 1960s-1990s, used for making artistic and educational diafilms and slides, but also for private photography. The developed film was viewed on slide projectors or with the help of diascopes, which enhanced the brightness of the images' colors.

Viewing private archives is a unifying experience, so bring your family and friends. We encourage you to bring only private slides that were taken by your relatives in the years 1960s-1990s. If you don't have any slides, we still encourage you to come to the screening to get acquainted with the stories of others.

The Open House Day will take place on September 9 from 12:00 to 17:00 at the Center for Urban History. In the Center's exhibition hall, experts from the Urban Media Archive will be waiting for you, and several zones will be open:

  • a zone for acquaintance and consultations, where your visit will begin;
  • a digitization zone, where a specialist will digitize a part of the slides — you will see what equipment can be used, learn how to store digital copies, and then the archivists will help you describe your materials;
  • a viewing zone where you, your family, and other visitors can view the original slides on a projector together.

You can share the digital copies with your family and friends, and, if you wish, contribute the digital copies to the collection of the Urban Media Archive at the Center for Urban History.

Along with the slides, please bring a flash drive or hard disk to record digital copies.
On the day of the event, we will be able to digitize up to 50 slides for each participant. For the convenience of organizing the event, we encourage you to pre-register here if you plan to bring slides.

The slideshow is part of the European Heritage Days 2023 program.

European Heritage Days

In 1991, the Council of Europe launched European Heritage Days. Every year, about 50 countries that have joined the European Cultural Convention celebrate European Heritage Days. This tradition is intended to draw public attention to cultural heritage and its role in the development of modern society.

For thirteen years in a row, Lviv has been participating in the events as part of the European program. This year’s European Heritage Days in Lviv will take place on September 8-10, united by the theme “Living Heritage”. All events within the framework of the European Heritage Days are free of charge and are based on the initiative of people who care about the history of their city.
