Lviv

Historians are still debating and trying to determine how many members of the Jewish community managed to survive during the Nazi occupation of Lviv. Yet behind every set of figures and estimates lie countless stories of people whose lives were transformed by the tragedy of war. What do we know about them? Who spoke on their behalf and managed to tell their stories to the whole world? How many stories remain untold?

During our walk, we will pass by buildings, churches, markets and fountains, monuments and other sites in Lviv that have long been associated more with peaceful life. However, during the Second World War, they witnessed both the deaths of a third of Lviv's inhabitants and the remarkable stories of the rescue of small groups of Jews. One such rescued family was the Higers. Their story became widely known thanks to the translation of Christina Higer's book "The Girl in the Green Jumper" and its film adaptation.

It is precisely the story of this family's survival and their rescue in Lviv's sewers over the course of fourteen months following the liquidation of the ghetto in May 1943 that will guide us through the streets of modern-day Lviv.

Duration: around 2 hours.
