February 26-27, 2009

Center for Urban History, Lviv

For the first time in Ukraine the British Council organized the Future City Game, a project running in 15 countries including: Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Ukraine and finally Russia.

Future City Game was a two-day event during which inhabitants of your town — from different backgrounds and representing different disciplines and outlooks — assemble with one common aim: generating the best ideas of how to improve the quality of life in Lviv. Encouraging creative thinking, energetically addressing the challenges facing your city, seeing your city in the context of common issues facing cities like yours from around the world, and finally making peoples’ lives better… this is what Future City Game is all about.

The Game was a competition to identify the best possible ideas addressing long-term challenges facing your city. After presenting your initial ideas, you will then test them in real life by meeting with local community members, experienced practitioners, and city administration. Your idea could be anything — a policy, service, product, building or behaviour — but it must be innovative, forward-thinking, relevant to the local community, and finally, achievable and sustainable.

Future City Game

  • provides an imaginative and creative tool to stimulate ideas for a sustainable city
  • provides personal, social and professional development opportunities to aspiring urban influencers and innovators
  • stimulates networks between people from different disciplines and cultures
  • broadenes the number of people involved in shaping the future of cities.

Why play Future City Game?

It is an opportunity to meet like-minded peers from various backgrounds in your country and from across Europe, learn new skills, add value to your CV and have a say in important decisions made about your city

It is fun. While the topic under discussion is serious, the gaming elements serve to make the process enjoyable and fun.

Unlocks problems — the game provides you with the freedom to find unconventional solutions to complex issues.

Who are we looking for?

We are keen to bring together highly motivated young people who are passionate to create a better world and eager for personal development.

We are looking for people who love their cities, are eager to make them a better place to live, work and play in; are interested in teamwork, communication, as well as working across disciplines and cultural differences.
