The focus of the presentation will be on Lviv debate on the architecture of the city that criticized both old architecture and Austrian period developments, and architecture of the autonomy period. The image of the architecture of the city found its expression in official documents, and also in letters of the Union of Conservation Experts of East Galicia (Gronо Konserwatorów Galicji Wschodniej), and also in media (technical and daily), in guide books of Lviv, and in memories of the citizens. Dr. Lupienko will use selected examples to illustrate how sources, primarily in the Polish language, were assessing old and new architecture, whether they attributed some national features to it, and how they treated historicism, and also how they tried to search for architectural identity of the city in the late 19th century.
