November 19-20, 2010

Center for Urban History, Lviv

The first day of the conference highlighted the history, socio-cultural and technical aspects of the Poltva’s current condition and also provided the opportunity to hear, first-hand, similar experiences of other cities.

On the seminar’s second day, participants determined the Poltva’s potential in Lviv.  They were given the opportunity to develop and present ideas regarding the Poltva’s future, as well as methods of realizing its social, economic, ecological and cultural potential.

Invited to the conference were international experts involved in the revitalization of city rivers in Europe.

The idea for conducting the conference and seminar was initiated by the Museum of Ideas, a civic group within the framework of the "LeoPoltwis" project, which was founded in 2008 and has as its goal saving Lviv’s Poltva River as the core of the city’s cultural and social life.  The organizer of the conference and seminar was a joint Ukrainian-German project of GTZ, Germany’s federally-owned society for technical cooperation, and which is involved in Lviv’s development and renewal of its old section.  The seminar’s co-organizer was the Center for Urban History of East Central Europe, a nonprofit organization that supports civic and cultural initiatives and is involved in researching the city.
