Dr. Artem Kharchenko

historian, affiliated researcher

Associate Professor at the Department of Ukrainian Studies, Culturology, and the History of Science at the National Technical University "KhPI" in Kharkiv, where he works on a monograph "Jewish Community Within the Space of an Imperial City, 1859–1923." He studied history at V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. He defended his PhD thesis on the history of the family in the Kharkiv region in the nineteenth century. 

From 2019 to 2023, he was a lecturer on Holocaust history at the Claims Conference, a university partnership program. Co-founder of the "Center for research of interethnic relations of Eastern Europe" NGO. In 2011, he participated in the summer research school "Jewish History and Culture of Central and Eastern Europe in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries" at the Centre for Urban History. He participated in education programs in the USA, France, and Germany. He was a guest researcher at the Simon Dubnov Institute in Leipzig, New European College in Bucharest, Jerusalem University. Some recent publications include chapters in a collective monograph, "Uman. (Un) known stories of the city," Kharkiv, 2021.

He has held research residencies at the Center: in 2022 with the project "Documenting the Experiences of War" (supported by the Free University of Berlin) and in 2024 with the topic "Childhood on the Street, 1920s-1930s".

As an affiliated researcher, Artem joins the research projects of the Center for Urban History. From 2022 to the present, he has been a participant in the Centre's international documentation initiative ‘24.02.22, 5 am: Testimonies from the War’. Since 2025, Artem has been cooperating with the Centre as part of the EHRI project – European Holocaust Research Infrastructure.
