During the Urban Seminar Olena Chervonik will examine two Ukrainian manifestations of the Worker Photography Movement (WPM): the Kharkiv-based journal Foto dlia Vsikh (1928–1931) and the First National Exhibition of Worker Photography held in Lviv in 1936. Together, these cases—a periodical and an exhibition—demonstrate both the public reach and regional scope of the movement.
Organized by Wladislaw Bednarchuk, a member of the Lviv Photographic Society, the exhibition contrasts with the explicitly proletarian orientation of Foto dlia Vsikh, as Bednarchuk himself was neither an amateur nor a worker. His interest, probably, lay primarily in the iconographic potential of worker photography, revealing a central polarity of the WPM: the working class appears both as image-maker and as depicted subject.
After 1932, the WPM was effectively suppressed by party decree, as worker photography became undesirable amid worsening labor conditions and collectivization. Against this backdrop, the 1936 Lviv exhibition appears belated and largely deprived of emancipatory potential, aestheticizing politics rather than politicizing aesthetics.
During the Urban Seminar, researcher will therefore focus on archival materials related to this exhibition, examining its organization, press reception, and impact on the local art scene and society.
An art historian and curator, she specializes in history and theory of photography and modern and contemporary art. In her current research project, Olena investigates two Ukrainian manifestations of the Worker Photography Movement (1929-1939): the photographic journal Foto dlia Vsikh, published in Kharkiv between 1928 and 1931, and the First National Exhibition of Worker Photography, held at the City Industry Museum in Lviv in 1936. Together, these two cases – a periodical and an exhibition – illustrate both the public dimensions and the regional breadth of the movement. During the residency at the Center, she plans to focus on archival materials related to the latter event.
