In his professional work, he combines academic research with practical experience of participating in modern warfare. His research interests include the military-political history of Ukraine, contemporary armed conflicts, international security, and military aid to Ukraine. In his research, he focuses on the problem of transforming combat experience into a full-fledged historical source.
He is the author of scholarly publications on the Russian-Ukrainian war, including a study of the Kherson offensive operation by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, prepared using testimonies from combatants. His approach combines the tools of military historiography, oral history, and the analysis of contemporary digital sources.
As part of the LivArch scholarship for documenting and archiving the war at the Center for Urban History, Serhii will work on a project dedicated to documenting and preparing for the archiving of oral and semi-oral testimonies from participants in the 2022 Kherson offensive operation. The project involves conducting interviews with combatants, particularly military personnel who are now based in Lviv after their service, as well as remotely engaging other respondents. Special attention will be paid to the ethical and security aspects of working with sensitive data, as well as to developing practical approaches for their long-term preservation and use in research on modern warfare.
