The lecture by Jerzy Mazur discussed the circle of Jewish historians of pre-Holocaust era whose research interests focused on Ukrainian lands. The speaker examined the image of Ukraine, and most particularly Lviv in the scholarly works that were published in the 19th and early 20th century by such figures as Jecheskiel Caro. Furthermore, the talk will touched upon the intellectual discourse about the supposed Khazar origins of Ukrainian Jewish community, and the polemics between the Polish and Jewish historians concerning this topic.

is a Visiting Professor of Jewish History at State University of New York – Binghamton. Currently he is preparing a book on the late medieval and early modern Ukrainian Jewish history.
