21.01.2012

The class for children (ages 8 – 10) in our "Home of My Dreams" series took place on January 21, 2012. The "Home of My Dreams" project is part of the "Home: A Century of Change" exhibition at the Center.

"Home" is a concept that children imbue with many meanings: the family and the building where they live; the furniture and everyday surroundings. The "Home of My Dreams" program intends to unfold existing knowledge, to encourage the children to think analytically about the presented material, develop perspective, and try on the role of creators of their own "dream homes." Instruction in the classes will stress the ethical, aesthetic, artistic and cultural aspects of home. In light of the audience’s age, the theoretical material will be presented accessibly in diagrams, pictures and interactive classes.

The topic of this week’s class was "Celebrations at Home." Holidays at home are perhaps the most joyful occurrence connected to home. Religious, state, family and personal holidays are important moments in life that remain in memory for a long time, or perhaps for a lifetime. They demand thorough and considerate preparations, and are eagerly awaited. One of the elements of a festive occasion, dictated by etiquette, is the sending of a greeting card. Special value is placed upon handmade and personal greeting cards.

The participants of the class were given the opportunity to create their own greeting card for one of the different possible festivities:

  • personal (birthday or feast day)
  • family (baptism, wedding, anniversary)
  • "calendar" or social (Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, New Year, etc.)
  • state (Constitution Day, Independence Day, etc.)
  • religious (depending on creed)

The three-hour class includes:

  • A lecture part, where the concept of "home" is examined in various contexts (in a series of interactive games and an electronic presentation)
  • A viewing part, with a visit to the "Home: A Century of Change" exhibition, and a screening of animated films, dedicated to the topic of home
  • An artistic part, where the children can realize their creative potential, using artistic means to create their own "dream home"

Classes were taught by two teachers of the Spirograph Arts and Culture Studio:

 Andrii Sendetskyi    Oleh Boliuk
