"Home of My Dreams"

The next class for children ages 8 - 10 in the "Home of My Dreams" series took place on February 18, 2012. "Home of My Dreams" is a project implemented as part of the "Home. A Century of Change" exhibition at the Center for Urban History.

"Home" is a concept that children imbue with many meanings: the family and the building where they live; the furniture and everyday surroundings. The "Home of My Dreams" program intends to unfold existing knowledge, to encourage the children to think analytically about the presented material, develop perspective, and try on the role of creators of their own "dream homes." Instruction in the classes will stress the ethical, aesthetic, artistic and cultural aspects of home. In light of the audience’s age, the theoretical material will be presented accessibly in diagrams, pictures and interactive classes.

This week’s class focused on questions of comfort, peace, and warmth in a home. These concepts will elicit a number of different associations, depending on the interlocutor, but many of them will involve pets. Urbanization has certainly removed domestic animals from cities, but residents of the suburbs still keep them at times. Feeding the pets, and cleaning after them, is of course an obligation of the owners of a home – after all, pets require attention. However, these activities are usually seen as part of leisure, engaged in consciously and willingly, since pets give so much back. Animals, birds, reptiles, and fish lived and continue to live in the house, and remain the object of children’s desires. Children have all kinds of stories and experiences, fun, exciting, and ordinary, related to their pets. We attempted to visualize our thoughts of pets in our class.

The three-hour class includes:

• A lecture part, where the concept of "home" is examined in various contexts (in a series of interactive games and an electronic presentation)
• A viewing part, with a visit to the "Home: A Century of Change" exhibition, and a screening of animated films, dedicated to the topic of home
• An artistic part, where the children can realize their creative potential, using artistic means to create their own "dream home"

• February 25, 2012 (for children ages 6-7)
• March 3, 2012 (for children ages 8-10)

Classes will take place every Saturday from 11.00 am to 2.00 pm at the Conference Room of the Center for Urban History of East Central Europe in Lviv at 6, Bohomoltsia St.

Participation in the program is free of charge.
