The class for children ages 8-10 in the "Home of My Dreams" series took place on April 21, 2012. "Home of My Dreams" is a project implemented as part of the "Home. A Century of Change" exhibition at the Center for Urban History.

"Home" is a concept that children imbue with many meanings: the family and the building where they live; the furniture and everyday surroundings. The "Home of My Dreams" program intends to unfold existing knowledge, to encourage the children to think analytically about the presented material, develop perspective, and try on the role of creators of their own "dream homes." Instruction in the classes will stress the ethical, aesthetic, artistic and cultural aspects of home. In light of the audience’s age, the theoretical material will be presented accessibly in diagrams, pictures and interactive classes.

The topic was "Home: My City." However cozy the rooms and buildings in which we live may be, the understanding of our home extends much further—to the entire locality where we live: whether it's a village, a town, a city, a metropolis. When we travel, we might in conversation talk about "our own" city (or village), and by this we mean the entire place. Indeed, within our hometown we go to various establishments and institutions and consider them ours. And so the expression "my village" or "my city"—which carries the significance of a small homeland for each of us—is also our native home.

The three-hour class includes:

  • A lecture part, where the concept of "home" is examined in various contexts (in a series of interactive games and an electronic presentation)
  • A viewing part, with a visit to the "Home: A Century of Change" exhibition, and a screening of animated films, dedicated to the topic of home
  • An artistic part, where the children can realize their creative potential, using artistic means to create their own "dream home"

As always, the class were taught by teachers of the Spirograph Arts and Culture Studio:

 Andrii Sendetskyi    Oleh Boliuk
