The Center for Urban History is going to present a new publication soon, a collective monograph, "Women's Dimensions of the Past: Ideas, Experiences, Representations," edited by Oksana Kis.

The Center for Urban History worked on the book together with the Ukrainian Association of Women's History Researchers in partnership with the Ethnology Institute National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine with the support of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Kyiv Office-Ukraine.

The monograph explores little-known aspects of the historical experience of Ukrainian women in the context of the prevailing social beliefs, legal norms, social institutions, and common practices of the period (from the late 17th to the early 21st century). The authors examine cultural (self-)representations of women in literature, epistolary, folklore, cinema, and visual art. Women's entry, accomplishments, and self-fulfillment in the professional milieu and urban space in the early 20th century are under scrutiny. The complexity and ambiguity of processes of women's association and self-organization are analyzed through experiences of women's activism in the diaspora, in the dissident movement, and in interactions with state authorities. The analysis of court cases, archival documents, and oral history materials allows us to highlight the historical dimensions of gender-based violence.

The monograph presents a variety of approaches to the study of major issues in women's history. It demonstrates the informative potential and limitations of various types of historical sources and reveals hitherto unknown pages of women's past.

The authors of the monograph are Victoria Ivashchenko, Maryana Baidak, Olena Haleta, Oksana Kuzmenko, Anastasia Kanivets, Kateryna Yakovlenko, Ihor Karpenko, Anastasia Bozhenko, Sofia Rosa-Lavrentiy, and Mayhill Fowler, Olena Hanusyn, Anastasia Myshusta, Maryna Voronina, Olha Labur, Iryna Savchenko, Alina Doboshevska, Oleksiy Vinnychenko, Olha Posunko, Ivanna Cherchovych, Daria Mattingly, Olena Kondratiuk, Olesya Khromeychuk.

Researchers Oksana Kis (Ukrainian Association of Women's History Researchers) and Alla Shvets (Ivan Franko Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) will participate in the presentation of the book.

The event will be moderated by Tamara Zlobina (Chief Editor of the portal "Gender in Details").
