The bilingual Polish-Ukrainian book is the outcome of the international research project on a town of the former Stanislaviv voivodship – Obertyn. Based on oral and recorded testimonies, the book presents the memory of Poles, Ukrainians, and Jews about their living together in South-East voivodships of the Second Polish Republic. Moreover, it depicts the circumstances of leaving the home places for a long time and separation during the Second World War and post-war.

The stories of citizens are intertwined to produce a collective narrative in a small town in Pokuttia area in ca. 1918 until the late 1950s. The publication invites to start the discussion in Poland and Ukraine on the contested, controversial, and traumatic issues that still have a lasting impact on Polish-Ukrainian-Jewish relations. The book is a monograph about the specific Galician town but the lead story is about the citizens and their experiences, whereas the town acts as an introduction to the story describing life and impact of totalitarianism of the 20th century on the fate of a common individual.
