Conference Room of the Center for Urban History

Final conference of the series of lectures "From City to the Mountains: Imagining Carpathians in Culture and Art" delivered online from March to June 2021.

During the conference, with researchers from different countries, we will consider how Carpathians were perceived, visited, described, captured in photos and in films. Our timeline starts from the late 19th century and runs until the 1990s, from the discovery and reclaiming to writing, photographing, and shooting, from visiting to transformed experiences of settling down. The topics focus on how the mountains and the countryside were taken as spaces for business, exotic residence, a source for urban symbolism and imagining. Therefore, in the project, mountains and the city make integral and intertwined spaces.

Organizers: Center for Urban History (Ukraine) and University of St Gallen (Switzerland)
