Title:
Soborna Square
City:
Description:
The Austriaplatz, todays Soborna Square, is the highest elevation downtown Chernivtsi (225 m). It is one of the oldest marketplaces in town where also firewood was traded. Therefor it used to be called Holzplatz. Later is was called Criminalplatz (after the court and jail locted at it) an only in 1875 it got the name Austriaplatz, commemorating 100 years of Austrian rule over the Bukowina.Because of its good size, the square was often used for festivities such as markets, fairs and circuses. The postcard shows people in their best dresses - the lady as well as the gentlemen and the peasants - most likely visiting booths of a fair or temporary amusement park. Looked at through a special lense, the ‘double card’ created a three dimensional effect.
