As soon as the Second World War was over Soviet government allocated 137 mln roubles for construction and industrial manufacturing development in Lviv. Along with reconstruction and expansion of existing factories, they also planned to build and bring into production a car assembly plant, electric bulb factory, factory for telegraph and telephone equipment, glass factory, knitting factory, food processing factories, and also to restart and increase the capacity of the city electric power station.

In 1948, on the basis of the Plant for Gas Equipment (Ukrgazaparat) at 7, Zaliznychna str. they started constructing the power lift trucks factory. Production units appeared one after another: tools production facility, mechanical repair unit, and a foundry repair unit.

In summer 1948, a large team of process and product engineers arrived from the Orgavtoprom Moscow technological institute. They started to develop technological processes and drafts for tools and equipment. The structure of the factory was designed in Dnipropetrovsk under the guidance of an automaker Vitaliy Hrachov.

The mass production at the factory was launched after a year. The first production batch was output on June, 11, 1949. A new forklift truck was a compact automotive lifting machine with a ‘4000’ code. Hence, in 1949 the factory managed to exceed the annual plan and produced over 1000 forklift trucks. Those were the first machines of the type both in Lviv, and in the entire Soviet Union.

Over the year, the number of workers has increased significantly, too. While in the beginning of the year the factory employed 1100 persons, in the end they were already 2285. In 1950, an assembly line production was established and a new power lift truck model was developed, a ‘4000М’ model. After ten years, the factory was already producing hydraulic cranes ‘4031’, ten ton automatic loaders ‘4008’ and a ‘4032’ model produced not by one team as in 1948-1949 but by 19 times at the same time.

The pictures in the photo gallery are borrowed from the collection of Lviv Power Lift Trucks Factory. They show the first years of operation (1948-1951) when the units were established and launched, production and output processes arranged, and also first successful achievements celebrated.
